With the arrival of Fall in our part of the world, it’s time to spend a thorough look at the colors that are “in” for this season. And where could we find better guidance as in the Pantone Fall Colors 2016?
To be honest, I wasn’t too excited about Pantone’s choice Rosequarz and Serenity as colors of the year 2016. I mean Baby Girl Pink and Baby Boy Blue, are you serious, Pantone? We’ve been trying to get these colors out of our nurseries for decades now! But at least they were an improvement about Marsala in 2015, I never grew fond of that muddy brownish red. My favorites were for sure 2014 with Radiant Orchid and 2013 with timeless Emerald – shades I still dig today.
Pantone Fall Colors 2016 – Overview
The Pantone fall colors 2016 palette is supposed to be centered around colors that “suggests strength, confidence, and complexity.” The hues are also supposed to “reflect our desire for tranquility and optimism.” I’m not sure if I get any of the described feelings from the selection, but I like the calmer, more muted tones.
Instead of using traditional fall colors like bright orange or yellow tones, this year’s palette features more muted tones. The top 3 colors Riverside, Airy Blue and Sharkskin are cool blue / grey hues and feel very elegant to me. Aurora Red, Spicy Mustard and Dusty Cedar are more warm and “traditional fall”. These colors are complimented perfectly by Potter’s Clay and Warm Taupe.
Lush Meadow reminds me a lot of Emerald, but is a more muted shade. Bodacious as last color pops great as an accent color against the other shades, and is the only color with a pink (albeit powdery and muted) hue.
How to pull it all together
I had some fun playing with the various shades and created 3 color schemes out of them. Feel free to use these combinations in your own designs!
This palette has been inspired by the clear, fresh autumn air and the majestic leaves. It features Riverside, Airy Blue and Sharkskin as main colors and Aurora Red and Spicy Mustard as accent colors.
Play in the leaves
Do you remember when you were a kid and the best feeling was to jump into that huge leave pile that your Dad has just raked together? Or walking through the forest and collecting bright and beautiful leaves to bring home and gift to your Mom? This palette is more “traditional autumn” with Aurora Red and Spicy Mustard as main colors. They’re accompanied by Warm Taupe, Dusty Cedar and Potter’s Clay as accent colors
Although Bodacious is almost “the black sheep” of this year’s Pantone fall colors, I really find it goes along well with Lush Meadow and Spicy Mustard as main colors. Dusty Cedar and Sharkskin finish off this color scheme nicely.
I couldn’t resist creating another color scheme around the iconic fall vegetable. And Halloween is around the corner, too!
